The June 2020 SSD benefits statistics report shows the second-largest drop in total beneficiaries since June 2019. This month, the SSA struck 51,000 SSDI beneficiaries from the active payment rolls. While the disabled workers category lost 14,000 recipients, even more children stopped receiving benefit payments in June. Since last month, the government removed at least 36,000 children of disabled workers from that beneficiary group. While these numbers probably seem high to some readers, they represent all SSDI beneficiaries currently in active-payment status. In other words, these aren’t people who just got approved for disability within the last month. Overall, the SSA approved 73,448 new disability claims since May, according to the June 2020 SSD benefits statistics report. That includes 49,320 newly approved disabled workers, 2,404 spousal beneficiaries and 21,724 children. That last category includes 15,983 kids younger than 16 with disabled parents, 1,457 disabled children and 4,284 students aged 17-19.

The June 2020 SSD benefits statistics report also includes average monthly pay amounts for each recipient group. Those payments fell month-to-month for nearly every category, except the total average nationwide. With a $1.35 pay cut, children’s SSDI benefits saw the biggest average monetary loss for June. Husbands and wives got paid $.86 less, on average, compared to last month. Disabled workers barely saw their average benefit amount shift from May to June with just a $.02 pay cut. On the flip side of these cuts, the average total monthly SSDI payment nationwide increased by $2.30 this month.

This includes people on disability for several years as well as those with recently approved claims. Disabled workers approved in the last 30 days qualified for $1,427.67 in monthly SSDI benefits, on average. Spousal beneficiaries with newly approved claims will receive $371.42/month, while children got $376.46/month, on average. The average man’s SSDI payment each month nationwide is now $1,258.96; for women, it’s $1,131.09.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Data in the June 2020 Report

We’ll now review how SSI benefits changed in the last month, according to the June 2020 SSD benefits statistics report. About 3,000 working-age claimants got approved for SSI since May. The children’s category gained 7,000 new SSI recipients within the last month. However, seniors lost 3,000 total beneficiaries from this month’s rolls compared to May. Overall, these shifts across different demographic groups mean there are now 8,000 more SSI recipients nationwide this month:

Total SSI beneficiaries: 8,056,000 (+8,000)

Children under 18 receiving SSI: 1,131,000 (+7,000)

SSI recipients aged 18-64: 4,628,000 (+3,000)

SSI recipients aged 65+: 2,296,000 (-3,000)

SSI beneficiaries aged 18-64 received $.81 more in June, with an average monthly benefit of $605.89. Those SSI payments fell from $686.41/month in May down to just $683.70/month for June, on average.
